Drilling for water in many areas of BC is a challenge since drilling for water can be a hit & miss process. When deciding to drill a well, most of us will just hop on Google and search “water well drilling near me,” we call and ask, “what is cost to drill a well?” We’re not doing ourselves a favor when the first question we ask a well drilling contractor is, “How much per foot do you charge to drill a well?!”

Lets talk about the real potential cost of drilling a well… you will be informed that if a drilling company drills a dry hole (a non-producer), you’re on the hook to pay the $35.00 – $60.00 per foot plus all additional well drilling costs as estimated. Example: Let’s say a dry well is drilled through 500′ of bedrock, that portion alone could total $18,000 or more… there will be others costs. Your final dry well invoice in this case will exceed $20,000.

Once you have yourself in that situation does the cost per foot to drill a well really matter? Heck NO!

I wanted to sell my ranch in Hefley Creek, BC, but I was desperate to find water since the spring which had been running my whole life dried up. I had a lot of anxiety wondering how I could sell my property with two homes and no water.

“I contacted a local drilling company. They came to our subdivision project in Darcy, BC, and—without even getting out of the truck—the guy said it was going to be easy. He told us to mark wherever we wanted the wells, and he would drill until we found water. At $55 a drilled foot with no guarantee of finding water, it wasn’t an option I liked!”

“We’d been hauling water for many years, so we hired a seismic water finding firm out of Calgary. They assessed six sites on the property. None were very promising, and it still cost us about $7,000. We drilled three wells with three different drillers to depths of around 700 feet each, costing us to the tune of approximately $60,000. And guess what? They were all dry!”

“We drilled wells at three locations as far the bedrock at the cost of $33,896.76. The first well was dry, and the second and third wells—which are the source of our potable water—were only good for 0.5 and 1.0 gallons per minute (GPM), respectively. After our irrigation wells dried up, we drilled the fourth well at the cost of $7,381.50, but it was also dry.

Finally, Tuesday around mid-morning, all of a sudden there was a huge gush of water. We had hit the jackpot!! We could not believe that we had 30-gallons-per-minute of beautiful, clear, odor free water almost right outside out front door! This was an incredible day for my husband Jim and I.
